Wireless Backhaul
When government applications demand high capacity broadband connectivity, there are limited choices available to bridge the last mile gap. These limitations range from expensive telecom solutions to geographic restrictions on legacy-based wireline infrastructure. Additionally, many municipalities have fiber built to some locations, but lack connectivity in others. Utilizing a new generation of technologies founded on the emerging Wi-MAX 802.16 standards, wireless broadband is allowing government networks to go further and faster than ever before at a fraction of the previous cost. As a result, municipalities no longer need to rely on the incumbent telecom providers. WindChannel has the capability and the experience to deploy these private wireless networks.
The Technology
The WindChannel wireless metropolitan access network family of products utilizes technology that can operate in the licensed and unlicensed radio spectrum. These systems can be deployed across a wide range of frequencies ranging from 700 MHz to 39 GHz with platform technology based on emerging IEEE 802.16 Wi-MAX standards. Bandwidth is sent wirelessly from an Access Point (AP) to a receiver (known as a Subscriber Unit (SU)) on top of municipal buildings and/or water towers.

Wi-Fi Network Combination
WindChannel’s Wi-MAN solution can be used to expand an existing Wi-Fi network to locations where the WiFi signal alone is not powerful enough to reach. For example, Wi-MAN Point-to-Point technology can link Wi-Fi Access Points to a single data source.
End-to-End Management
WindChannel will design and manage the installation process, ensuring that your customized Metropolitan Access Network is installed properly and on time. WindChannel can manage and monitor the infrastructure 24/7 on an ongoing basis from our Network Operations Center.
Redundancy
The WindChannel Wireless Metro solutions are perfect for providing redundant connectivity to vital resources. For buildings with primary fiber connections, WindChannel can deploy a wireless redundant link, ensuring access to vital resources in the event of a primary connection failure due to carrier outages or natural disasters. Such redundancy insures an always-on capability to access all critical applications and facilities. Scalability
WindChannel services are perfect for growing communities. Because Wi-Metro solutions are scalable, municipalities can expand the wireless network at their own pace. With speeds ranging from 1 Mbps to 100 Mbps of data connectivity, and distances of 30+ miles from the access point, the network is no longer burdened by carrier and location constraints. This opens up all the centralized network resources, such as databases, voice services and shared file systems. Since there are no Telco local loop circuits to install, the time and expense required to provision a typical fixed wireless connection are minimal.
Remote Locations
Many municipalities may have fiber built to some locations, but lack connectivity in others. Wi-Metro networks bridge the connection from one location to another, without the prohibitory expense of traditional wireline circuits . Whether across town or across a county, long-distance hops are now feasible with WindChannel’s Wi-Metro wireless solutions.
